Entrevista a Robin Hobb (Interview with Robin Hobb)

¡Buen día!
Y en compensación por la falta de reseñas –ustedes me disculparán, pero esta enfermedad latosa me ha agarrado amor y como que no le apetece soltarme =S –, traigo hoy para ustedes una entrevista que, al igual que la realizada al sexy y talentoso escritor cubano Yoss, ha sido producto del evento en Reddit Fantasía. Sólo que esta vez, tuve el honor de entrevistar a una mujer de gran corazón, sencilla hasta lo admirable y que recién inicia su incursión en el mercado mexicano. Estoy hablando de Robin Hobb, una autora que, para quienes sean chismosos, sabrán que en las redes se le compara con George R.R. Martin y Patrick Rothfus.
Así que nada, disfruten de la entrevista y, por supuesto, un millón de gracias a la escritora por acceder a responder a estas humildes preguntas.

Good morning!

To compensate for the lack of reviews –I apologize, but this pesky disease has gripped me love and do not feel like letting go = S- I bring today an interview that, like the one made to the sexy and talented writer Cuban Yoss, has been the product of fantasy Reddit event. Only this time, I had the honor to interview a woman of great heart, simple to the admirable and just began his foray into the Mexican market. I'm talking about Robin Hobb, an author who, for those who are gossips, know that in the networks is compared to George R.R. Martin and Patrick Rothfus.
So, enjoy the interview and, of course, a million thanks to the writer for access to answer these humble questions.

Tell us a little about you, Robin. Where are you from? At what age did you start writing?

Cuéntanos un poco sobre ti, Robin. ¿De dónde eres? ¿A qué edad comenzaste a escribir?

I was born in California, and grew up there until I was about ten years old.  After that, my family moved to Fairbanks, Alaska.  It was a large change from the sunny suburbs of San Rafael with sidewalks, lawns and ice cream vendors to a house made of logs on undeveloped land.  The lane to our house was so muddy that often our car could not go through and we would have to walk the last part of the way home. At first, we had no electricity or running water.  My mother put in a huge vegetable garden and my father hunted moose as well as working as an engineer for the City of Fairbanks.  I loved it, but my older sisters missed a more civilized life.  I could had big dogs and I was allowed to roam the forest as much as I wanted.

I started to write when I was very small, while I was still printing! I think I was 7 when I wrote a story about Halloween, and a little black cat who was frightened by the costumes.  Through my growing years, I always wrote or kept journals.  I wrote a lot of teenage love poetry filled with angst!  When I was 18, I began to attempt to sell my stories.  I started out selling children’s stories to very small magazines.  I collected many, many rejection slips!

Nací en California, y crecí allí hasta que tuve unos diez años. Después de eso, mi familia se mudó a Fairbanks, Alaska. Fue un gran cambio desde los suburbios soleados de San Rafael con aceras, jardines y vendedores de helados, a una casa hecha de troncos en el suelo no urbanizable. El carril a nuestra casa estaba tan lleno de barro que a menudo nuestro coche no podía pasar y teníamos que caminar la última parte del camino a casa. Al principio, no teníamos ni electricidad ni agua corriente. Mi madre puso un gran huerto de vegetales y mi padre cazaba alces, además de trabajar como ingeniero para la ciudad de Fairbanks. Me encantó, pero mis hermanas mayores perdieron una vida más civilizada. Pude tener perros grandes y me permitió recorrer el bosque tanto como yo quisiera.

Empecé a escribir cuando era muy pequeña, ¡mientras todavía estaba creciendo! Creo que tenía 7 cuando escribí una historia sobre Halloween, y un pequeño gato negro que estaba asustado por los trajes. A través de mis años de crecimiento, siempre escribí o me apropiaba de revistas. ¡Escribí un montón de poesía adolescente amorosa llena de angustia! Cuando tenía 18 años, empecé a tratar de vender mis historias. Empecé vendiendo cuentos infantiles a pequeñas revistas. ¡Recogí muchos, muchos rechazos!

Why have you opted for writing fantasy and science fiction?

¿Por qué te has decantado por escribir fantasía y ciencia ficción?

I started out writing for children.  In the US, the advice for new writers is always ‘Write what you know.’  And I took that advice in a very limited way.  I wrote simple little stories about ordinary things.  At first!  Then I began to write some stories that had dragons in them or magic. At the same time, I was reading mostly science fiction and fantasy, as I always had.  And one day I decided that perhaps instead of just ‘writing what I know’ I should try to ‘write what I love to read.’  And so I began writing fantasy and trying to sell my stories to the little amateur magazines called ‘fanzines’ in those days.  I learned a lot from them!

Empecé a escribir para niños. En los EE.UU., el consejo para los nuevos escritores es siempre "escribe de lo que sabes." Y tomé este consejo de una manera muy limitada. Primero, escribí pequeñas historias simples sobre cosas ordinarias. Entonces empecé a escribir algunas historias que tenían dragones o magia. Al mismo tiempo, estaba leyendo sobre todo ciencia ficción y fantasía, como siempre lo había hecho. Y un día, decidí que tal vez en lugar de sólo "escribir lo que sé” que debería tratar de "escribir lo que me encanta leer". Y así comencé a escribir fantasía y tratando de vender mis historias a las pequeñas revistas de aficionados llamados 'fanzines' en esos días. ¡He aprendido mucho de ellos!

What do you like to write? And what you hate most? /

¿Qué es lo que más te gusta de escribir? ¿Y lo que más detestas?

I love when I have my first draft of the book or story finished, and I can go back to the beginning and fix all the little and big mistakes in it. Rewriting is the part of the process that I love the best.  It is where I can describe the meal, or the clothing.  I can make the dialogue clever, and put in foreshadowing and clues of what is to come.

And you will guess now that the hardest part is the first draft.  Sometimes I feel like the story is a savage bird that I have to catch and then fasten down to the page!  It fights me and slaps me and when I am finished the first draft looks like a dead bird stapled to the page instead of the beautiful creature I first saw.  In the rewrites, I smooth all the feathers and arrange its wings and bring it back to life.  And eventually I hope it flies to the readers and they glimpse what I first saw.

Me encanta cuando tengo terminado mi primer borrador del libro o cuento, y puedo ir de nuevo al principio y corregir todos los errores pequeños y grandes. La reescritura es la parte del proceso que me encanta. Es donde puedo describir la comida, o la ropa. Puedo hacer el diálogo inteligente, y poner pistas de lo que está por venir.

Y debes saber que la parte más difícil es el primer borrador. A veces siento que la historia es un ave salvaje que tengo que atrapar ¡y luego llevarla a la página! Pelea y me da una bofetada y cuando he terminado el primer borrador, se parece a un pájaro muerto grapado a la página, en lugar de la hermosa criatura que vi por primera vez. En las reescrituras, aliso todas las plumas y arreglo sus alas y lo traigo de vuelta a la vida. Y finalmente, espero que vuele hacia los lectores y que ellos vean lo que yo vi por primera vez.

How does it feel to be a bestseller writer?

¿Qué se siente ser una escritora bestseller?

I don’t really believe it.  Oh, some days, I do.  I used to shop for my groceries with a calculator in one hand, because I had to keep a very strict budget.  My children’s clothing came from the second hand store, and the house we lived in was heated with an old wood stove.  I did not get a lot of money for my early books, so our fortunes changed very slowly.  So it is still very strange for me to be invited to a festival in France, and be flown there and stay in a very nice hotel and have many people want to meet me.  I think that is the most surprising part.  It still makes me wonder, “Why do you want to meet me?’ You have met my characters in the book and read my story, and that is really the best part of me, the part I love to share.  I fear I am a rather boring woman who is shy of meeting new people and cannot think of things to say!

Realmente no me lo creo. Oh, algunos días, sí lo hago. Yo solía comprar mis comestibles con una calculadora en la mano, porque tenía que mantener un presupuesto muy estricto. La ropa de mis hijos venía de la tienda de segunda mano, y la casa en que vivíamos se calentaba con una vieja estufa de leña. No obtuve un montón de dinero por mis primeros libros, así que nuestras fortunas cambiaron muy lentamente. Así que todavía es muy extraño para mí ser invitada a un festival en Francia, volar allí y alojarme en un hotel muy agradable y ver mucha gente que quiere conocerme. Creo que esa es la parte más sorprendente. Todavía me pregunto, “¿Por qué quieren verme? Has conocido a mis personajes en el libro y leído mi historia, y eso es realmente la mejor parte de mí, la parte que me encanta compartir”. Me temo que soy una mujer bastante aburrida, tímida para conocer gente nueva, ¡y no puedo pensar en cosas que decir!

Do you own any habit or hobby when you sit down to write? (Listen to music, drink coffee ...)

¿Posees algún hábito o manía indispensables a la hora de sentarte a escribir? (escuchar música, beber café…)

I drink coffee when I write.  Or tea, an herbal one if I am working very late and don’t want too much caffeine.  I used to keep salt water taffy in my desk drawer, but as I’ve aged, I cannot consume those calories without regretting them.  I do not type all day, but turn the machine on early in the morning and write until I reach a point where I’m not sure what happens next.  Then I go and do a simple chore such as weeding the garden or mowing the lawn or buying the groceries.  I let my mind wander and later, when I come back to the keyboard, I have an idea of what to write next.

Bebo café cuando escribo. O té, un herbario si estoy trabajando muy tarde y no quiero demasiada cafeína. A veces tengo dulces en el cajón de mi escritorio, pero como he envejecido, no puedo consumir las calorías sin lamentarlas después. No escribo todo el día, pero me siento en la máquina en la primera hora de la mañana y escribo hasta que llegue a un punto en que no estoy segura de lo que sucede a continuación. Entonces voy y hago una tarea simple, como desyerbar el jardín, o cortar el césped, o la compra en la tienda de comestibles. Dejo que mi mente divague y más tarde, cuando vuelva al teclado, tengo una idea de lo que debo escribir a continuación.

We will soon start selling your books in Mexico. To charge of what will be publishing editions?

Sabemos que próximamente tus libros comenzarán a venderse en México. ¿A cargo de qué editorial estarán las ediciones?

The Farseer Trilogy (Assassin’s Apprentice, Royal Assassin and Assassin’s Quest) are already available in Mexico.  The next books to be published are The Liveship Traders trilogy (Ship of Magic, The Mad Ship, and Ship of Destiny.)  I am published in Mexico by Me Gusta Leer, and I’ve very much enjoyed working with them.  The publishing staff is warm and very friendly.

La Trilogía Farseer (Aprendiz de asesino, Asesino Real y La Búsqueda del Asesino) ya están disponibles en México. Los siguientes libros para ser publicadas son La trilogía de las Naorredidivas de Mercaderes (Las Naves de la Magia, Las Naves de la Locura, y Las Naves del Destino.) Estoy publicando en México por Me Gusta Leer, y he disfrutado mucho trabajando con ellos. El personal editorial es cálido y muy amable.

What expectations do you have on your books and literary Mexican market?

¿Qué expectativas tienes sobre tus libros y el mercado-literario mexicano?

Well, I have more hopes than expectations!  It can be hard for a writer to break into a new market, and I am told that fantasy is not a strong category in Mexico’s literary tradition.  So I can only hope that people will sample the books and see if they enjoy them.  If they enjoy them, I hope they will recommend them to their friends.

Bueno, ¡tengo más esperanzas que expectativas! Puede ser difícil para un escritor entrar en un nuevo mercado, y me han dicho que la fantasía no es una categoría fuerte en la tradición literaria de México. Así que sólo puedo esperar que a la gente le gusten los libros y ver si ellos los disfrutan. Si los disfrutan, espero que se lo recomienden a sus amigos.

If you had to commend one of your books, what would it be?

Si tuvieras que recomendarnos uno de tus libros, ¿cuál sería?

I would recommend Assassin’s Apprentice because it is the beginning of Fitz’s story.  It introduces my world and my characters, as well as my style of writing.  If people have not tried fantasy before, it might be a good introduction to the genre of modern fantasy.

Yo recomendaría Aprendiz de Asesino porque es el comienzo de la historia de Fitz. Introduce mi mundo y mis personajes, así como mi estilo de escritura. Si las personas no han intentado antes la fantasía, podría ser una buena introducción al género de la fantasía moderna.

What would you say to all those people who despise fantasy?

¿Qué les dirías a todas aquellas personas que desprecian la fantasía?

If you have tried reading it and not enjoyed it, then I hope you find a sort of book that you do enjoy.  If you despise it without sampling it, then it is like a child who refuses to try a new food because it looks different or his friend does not like it.  I have found that within all the genres and mainstream of literature, I can find writers and stories I like. I enjoy mysteries and detective stories, westerns and romance and yes, even serious literature. I truly think that if you are adventurous at all, you can find reading you will enjoy in any section of the library.

Si has intentado leerlo y no lo disfrutaste, entonces espero que encuentres un tipo de libro que disfrutes. Si desprecias sin probar, entonces es como un niño que se niega a probar un alimento nuevo porque se ve diferente, o a su amigo no le gusta. He encontrado que dentro de todos los géneros y la corriente principal de la literatura, puedo encontrar escritores e historias que me gustan. Disfruto de misterios e historias de detectives, westerns y romance y sí, incluso la literatura seria. Realmente creo que si eres un aventurero total, puedes encontrar una lectura que puedas disfrutar en cualquier sección de la biblioteca.

And finally, any message for those who love to write fantasy and science fiction, and dream of one day being published?

Y por último, ¿algún mensaje para quienes nos encanta escribir fantasía y ciencia ficción, y soñamos con un día ser publicados?

Follow your dream.  Not every writer becomes a traditionally published author or succeeds in self publication.  For many, that is never the goal.  Some simply want to create a story for themselves or their families. The road to being published is not an easy one.  The writer has to work alone and apply self-discipline to finish each story.  And then one must be ready to listen to editorial advice or criticism and learn from it.  I have a large file of rejection slips. A writer has to learn not to take them personally, but to keep on writing and keep on submitting.  It takes a lot of perseverance and a measure of luck.

Sigue tu sueño. No todo escritor se convierte en un autor publicado o tiene éxito en auto publicación. Para muchos, no es el objetivo. Algunos simplemente quieren crear una historia para ellos o sus familias. El camino de la publicación impresa no es una tarea fácil. El escritor tiene que trabajar solo y aplicar la autodisciplina para terminar cada historia. Y entonces, debes estar dispuesto a escuchar el consejo editorial o la crítica y aprender de ella. Tengo un gran archivo de notas de rechazo. Un escritor tiene que aprender a no tomar esto personalmente, sino para seguir escribiendo y seguir presentando. Se necesita mucha perseverancia y una medida de suerte.
